Still, he’s willing to take whatever abuse she throws his way if it helps her muddle through the grief. Then one poor decision, a night in jail, and a divine assignment with a local pastor puts Mitch on an unexpected path.

MY REVIEW: I requested to read and review this book through Celebratelit. The opinions are my own. A positive review is not required.

So, with that out of the way I will tell you what I thought of the book. I enjoyed this book for the most part. The characters were believable and easy to relate to. The story flowed well and kept my interest throughout. The editing was well done with very few errors even though this was an ARC.

The story is Christian and shows the importance of leaning on God. It also skips back and forth between the two main characters. It's an easy transition.

What I did not like what the lack of proper grammar when the characters were speaking. I realize this is set in Tennessee and the author was trying to incorporate the drawl, but that did not excuse poor grammar. Things that just made them sound uneducated. I understand Southern drawl, I'm a Northern girl married to a Southern guy. All my inlaws speak with a pronounced southern accent but they use proper grammar. They have their sayings, as we all do, but that is not what I mean. It's things like using "them" instead of "those" for just one example.

Overall, I give this a 4 out of 5-star rating and I would recommend this to my friends.

Jennifer Sienes holds a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in education but discovered life-experience is the best teacher. She loves Jesus, romance and writing–and puts it altogether in inspirational contemporary fiction. Her daughter’s TBI and brother’s suicide inspired two of her three novels. Although fiction writing is her real love, she’s had several non-fiction pieces published in anthologies–two in Chicken Soup for the Soul. She has two grown children and one very spoiled Maltese. California born and raised, she recently took a step of faith with her real-life hero and relocated to Tennessee.

Last year I was interviewed on a Christian podcast, and the host asked me, “How do you come up with your story ideas?” There are as many answers to this question as there are authors, but he wasn’t satisfied with mine. I told him they truly come from the Lord. I think he wanted tips to encourage would-be writers. I’m sorry to disappoint, but although I might have a story sketch in my mind, it never matches the completed project. Why? Because I’m not in control.

Over the last several years, I’ve discovered that my writing journey is as much spiritual as it is creative. Shadow Dancing is a perfect example. It started with my intention to fictionalize the past marital difficulties of a young couple in my church. But before I finished the first chapter, it became clear the Lord had other ideas. The initial plot I’d fixed in my head doesn’t resemble the finished novel in any way—unless you consider the main characters are separated. The theme of my novels always reflects what I’m wrestling with in my heart at the time I’m writing it.

The major theme in Shadow Dancing is God’s sovereignty. Most of us have no problem accepting His will as long as our lives are going well. It’s when something difficult happens we begin to doubt His goodness. How often have you seen a tragedy pull a fellow Christian away from the Lord? The question, “Why would a loving God allow bad things to happen to good people?” has been a stumbling block for many people—both Christians and non-Christians alike.

But sometimes it’s the tragedies in life that draw people closer to God as they realize He’s the only hope they can cling to. This was the case for me. I believed in God, but I didn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, when my ex-husband of 23 years abandoned me. This was on the tail-end of my daughter’s near-fatal car accident that left us with months of rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury. It’s when I realized that believing I was in control of my life and that of my children was a lie from the enemy. We cannot protect those we love by hovering over them or keep a marriage intact by sheer will.

I wanted these truths to play out in the lives of Rebekah and Mitch Casey. In the light of heartache, Rebekah’s spiritual walk goes in one direction while Mitch’s goes another. But through it all, they are left with hope. That’s what I desire every word I ever write to point to. The hope we have in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And isn’t it the greatest gift to know our loving and merciful God has us in the palm of His righteous right hand—forgiven and free? So much better than relying on our own flawed and sinful selves.

I pray Shadow Dancing reminds you of everything we have and will continue to have as adopted sons and daughters through Jesus Christ. Hope of eternal life in a world where heartache and sin will be a thing of the past.

A locked secret garden in Manhattan with historical significance and the only ones privileged to step inside are the wealthy residents who purchase a key—count me in! The plot for The Keys to Gramercy Park was born at our dining room table when my husband looked up from the book he was reading and asked if I knew about Gramercy Park. I hadn’t, so we started Googling and discovered it was a real garden in Manhattan built in 1841 for the cream of society. The fact that it’s been off-limits to the public for one hundred and eight-two years instantly brought all kinds of story ideas to my mind.

Not long after, I discovered that Barbour Publishing Inc. was looking for dual-time stories to fill their Doors to the Past series. I love reading dual-time novels but I’d never written one. I love a good challenge, so I began plotting and before I knew it, I had another first—creating a villain.

I’ve only ever seen the New York City skyline from the New Jersey ferry that travels to and from the Statue of Liberty, so after the story was contracted, I spent several weeks researching Manhattan and Gramercy Park. New York is full of rich history and it was so fun to stumble across the historical details of The Player’s, Edwin Booth, and the stories behind each home along Gramercy Square.

One of my favorite things about writing this story was the juxtaposition of the timelines. We don’t have the present without the past, and what happens in the past affects the future, but the future can also determine how we view, feel, and learn about the past. That’s essentially what The Keys to Gramercy Park is about—the butterfly effect of past events reaching ahead two centuries with dire consequences. I love how in one scene the characters are sending telegraphs and in the next scene, they’re sending text messages.

My Review: I had not read anything by Candice Sue Patterson before but after reading this book I look forward to reading more from her. She is a very talented lady.

The book is set both in the present day and the time just after the Civil War. It is not a time travel book, just the past and the present woven into one very intriguing story.

The book is listed as Christian and for quite a long time I had my doubts, but, it finally does show the Christian element eventually, and quite well at that.

The story is very much historical with a bit of mystery and love-story thrown in and done well. The characters were very well developed and the editing was very well done even though I read an ARC version.

I give this a strong 4 out of 5 rating and would definitely recommend this to my friends. I asked to read and review this book through CelebrateLit

Her Only Wish by Shelley Shepard Gray

This is the second book in this series that I have read. It is an easy-to-read story. This book focuses on Betsy, one of the three from the first book. Betsy is shy because she stutters and has asthma.

I feel this book is a good read for a young adult or anyone looking for a quick read. It is not your typical Amish story. The story flows well but is not at all deep. You do not really get to know the characters. It doesn't feel real, but that's ok for a fictional tale.

Why I Wrote Lilac Cottage

I had felt the Lord nudging me to write a sequel to my first-ever Women’s Fiction, Butterfly Cottage (after writing 20+ Historical Romances in Christian Fiction). I travel up to the Straits of Mackinac each summer to do book signings, library visits, and to see family and friends. At several of my book signings at the Island Bookstore, on Mackinac Island, I had readers ask if I had a sequel planned for Butterfly Cottage. I met a lovely young reader at one of the signings, who worked at Lucky Bean, my fave coffee shop in the world and it is on the island. Rachel asked me about plans for the next book and I thought – what if I had a young heroine who worked at Lucky Bean for the summer? Ya know, most authors stories start with the what if. So, I also tossed around the notion of what if Rachel was actually camping out in one of the mansions, called “cottages”, up on West Bluff? That spawned my plot thoughts.

When I work, I percolate an idea. I also will not pursue writing a story unless God’s hand is on it. So, I first submitted my will to His. I got the go ahead. I also got a lot of other stuff: Norovirus, Covid, a root canal and crown, a bleed on an optic nerve, and also what I thought might be a heart attack but thankfully it was only my Rheumatoid Arthritis, oh and did I mention recurrent shingles? Yup—all that. So, I figure there must be a reason this book needs to be written for me to have confronted such opposition from the enemy.

This is my very first novel where the main characters are all saved and are all newbies as far as being refreshed in their faith. At my church, one of the pastors preached about how new Christians are so on fire for the Lord and how they are often different from those of us who have been saved for a long time. I wanted to have that reflected in this novel.

I know people have strong feelings about the pandemic. I wanted to make sure I had written something that included some reality of what the winding down was like in 2022, which is when the story is set. My father was born in 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic and I always felt that authors from that time didn’t include enough references to how this affected people. I didn’t dwell on Covid in this novel, but I did touch on it in I hope realistic ways, such as shortages of workers.

Whew! One other reason I wrote some of the characters in this book was to give one of my continuing characters, Mrs. Hampy Parker, some redemption. She’s been a Co-dependent in two of my books (Butterfly Cottage and Behind Love’s Wall) and it was time, since she’s now in her early 80’s, for her to get free from that. I enjoyed the new start her character got and it was inspired by one of my friend’s real life stories.

My Review: I truly enjoyed this book and give it a rare 5 out of 5 stars. I read the book Behind Love's Wall by Carrie Fancett Pagels and really enjoyed it and this book is in the same vein.

This book is set in modern-day times as opposed to the other book I read but there were a lot of the same names in this book as the other. And, that is my only complaint, too many names and I got confused trying to keep them all in order. Especially the one named Parker as it seemed that was both the first and last name of this character.

The story flowed very well and it was a quick and easy read for me. The editing was well done and the story flowed well. It is a Christian book and that was very evident in a faith-based but not preachy way.

I was given a chance to read and review this book through CelebrateLit. The opinions are truly my own and freely given.

In This Moment by Gabrielle Meyer

I received this book from LibraryThing via Netgalley. No positive review is required and all thoughts are fully my own.

I liked this book, it held my interest. My biggest problem with it is that it is listed as a Christian book. I feel that it should not be. Even though the main character prays, etc. I feel it can't be Christian (though it's a great, clean fiction) as it goes against what is written in the Bible, Hebrews 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once... Other than this I did enjoy the book.

It is definitely a unique story and very well written. The main characters were mostly very well-developed. The story flowed in an orderly manner. Lastly, it was very well edited.

I give this a 3.5 out of 5 but since most don't allow fractions, I go up to 4 instead of down to 3. If you are looking for a clean, intriguing book, this is for you.

In the Shadow of the River by Ann H Gabhart

First I want to say that I received an ARC of the book from Revell Reads through Netgalley. A positive review is not required and all thoughts are my own.

I asked to read and review this book for several reasons. First, I enjoy books by this author, Ann H Gabhart. Second, I enjoy Christian fiction, especially historical fiction. Third, the novel setting intrigued me.

This story is part mystery, part history, and a little bit of love story. The book was well-developed though not deep. It was an easy read. It kept my interest throughout. It was also definitely a Christian book without being preachy or pushy. It showed that a true Christian draws closer to God when times get rough. This book also looks at what is really a family. The characters were quite well developed though not deep. I figured out the bad character easily but not the motives.

If you like historical fiction that is clean without any vulgarity you will enjoy this book. I give it a strong 4 out of 5-star rating.

Love interests me. Not just in the romantic sense, but in every sense, because love is the driving emotion behind so much of what we do. It’s the heartbeat of everything. What do we have but love? Yet isn’t it the very essence of our greatest pain?

My Review:

I was so looking forward to reading this book but I was extremely disappointed overall. It took me literally almost halfway through the book to start enjoying any of it. I would have stopped reading altogether if I had not volunteered to read and review this book through Celebrate Lit.

This is a Christian Regency Romance. It was not believable in general. The characters were hard to get to like except the brother, Heath. I felt the characters were not as fully developed as possible. It was Christian in a light sense. Not at all preachy and barely mentions faith until the last quarter of the book or so.

Another thing, and I'm not sure if it was because this was an ARC copy and will be fixed or not, but there was no way to distinguish when the story took a turn. At one point two people are talking and the very next sentence was a total change in scenery. This was very off-putting.

I have read other books by Hannah Linder and I enjoyed those much more. She's a good author, but this book fell short of her usual style and quality.

Overall I give this a 2 out of 5-star rating.
